I am writing about myself and will tell you the significance of my story. First, my story is unique. It is a story of a man who began his journey from nowhere, the nomadic society of Iran, but worked his way up. This is my success story. My life could be one of the rest, but I did not want it to be that way. I welcomed all the risks and their consequences to overcome the entire social, political and economical barriers in order to control my destiny.
Now sitting in the heart of the North American society, I get a chance to glance back and write about myself. I am hoping to discover myself further and flash the hope on to those who are struggling to overcome the barrier in their way of becoming successful. I think the best gift I could give to those whom I love is to tell the truth about myself. This would give them a strong reason and motivation not to give up their goals. If I can do it with all the obstacles that I have gone through, then you can do it, too.
Second, my life is a coincident with the major changes in our society. The modernization of Iran under the authoritarian state, resistance against this modernization, revolution, war, prison and migration were all major events that affected our people, one way or another. Since I took active part of it, my story is not isolated from those events. In another words, my story will reflect the reality of life in a specific period of our history which otherwise might remain unknown and silent.
Third, my private and public life is quite unusual and unique. In private life, I have experienced at least four styles of life: nomadic, countryside, sedentary life in Iran, and modern life in other parts of the world, particularly the North American society. In terms of jobs, I have revolved around many (now more or less stable). I have worked everywhere, from a low economy job and the environmental industry to the highest income sector in the world. In terms of education, I have changed at least three areas of studying and three universities. In terms of love, marriage and divorce, I have some patience on its way, you will learn. In public life, I have associated and lived with the lowest sector of the society in term of their income and social status. I worked with them and even slept along with them in the street. I also became friends and associated with those who were leading figures of society or have public position, such as prime ministers. Having contact with these two different sectors of society occurs both in my own country and also here in Canada.
Fourth, I am in a good position to share my experience. I am writing about the period that I have already put behind me. This period of two decades cools down the emotional aspect and helps me to talk fairly and analyze the event objectively. Being in the academic environment, I became more aware of my own bias and learnt to think more openly and critically. I feel I am in a position to treat others who have come in contact with me fairly. For privacy, I will try to avoid the individuals name as much as possible. However, those who have been involved in my life could locate themselves in the story easily.
Finally, what I would like to do is to open up myself to my family, friends, lover, and people around me. I would like them to have an accurate impression of me. My message is that no matter what situation you are in, you can change your life in the way you want. I am not saying that this is easy, but it is possible for each individual to do so. Once you have a thought of something in your mind and you can feel it, it means you have the ability to do it; otherwise, God or nature would not permit that idea to reflect on you.
I also do not want people who read my story to treat me as a hero, a person who does unusual things that no one else does or a person who did not make mistakes or always made the right choices. As a matter of fact, I have made many mistakes and I am still making some. I have come a long way. My life has been up and down. I have enjoyed and suffered. I tasted being poor and rich, being unknown and known, being alone or surrounded with people. You name it. However, I am now happy, pleased and grateful for all the people I have met. Now I feel free. I enjoy every moment of life. I love what I do. I know there is a special part of my life that needs to be filled with a special person. I am very sure that will come soon, too.
